چکیده

At present, one of the most serious issues in medicine is increasing resistance of bacterial pathogens to antimicrobial agents. This fact is associated with higher mortality and morbidity rates, prolonged hospital stays and increased treatmentrelated costs (Senkyrikova et al., 2013). Such negative trends have been observed in Acinetobacter baumannii which is responsible for a variety of nosocomial infections, including bacteraemia, urinary tract infections, diabetic ulcers, pneumonia, especially in mechanically ventilated patients and intravenous devices infections; with mortality rates range from 19% to 54 % (Eveillard et al., 2010). Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii outbreak at university hospital

Nineteen clonally related imipenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolates were recovered from eight intensive care unit patients. All isolates harboured bla OXA-51-like β-lactamase genes and showed the absence of 22 kDa fraction in outer membrane porin profile analysis. It suggests a combination of two mechanisms as responsible for carbapenem-resistant phenotypes.

Emergence of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii harboring the OXA-23 carbapenemase in intensive care units of Egyptian hospitals.

BACKGROUND Healthcare-associated infections are a worldwide threat to hospitalized patients, especially those in intensive care units. The prevalence of these infections in Egypt, and their antimicrobial resistance patterns and mechanisms, were investigated in this study. METHODS A total of 547 cases of healthcare-associated infections were investigated. Causative agents were identified and a...

Emergence of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii as the major cause of ventilator-associated pneumonia in intensive care unit patients at an infectious disease hospital in southern Vietnam

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a serious healthcare-associated infection that affects up to 30 % of intubated and mechanically ventilated patients in intensive care units (ICUs) worldwide. The bacterial aetiology and corresponding antimicrobial susceptibility of VAP is highly variable, and can differ between countries, national provinces and even between different wards in the same ho...

Antibiotic-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii Increasing Success Remains a Challenge as a Nosocomial Pathogen

Antibiotic-resistant infectious bacteria currently imply a high risk and therefore constitute a strong challenge when treating patients in hospital settings. Characterization of these species and of particular strains is a priority for the establishment of diagnostic tests and preventive procedures. The relevance of Acinetobacter baumannii as a problematic microorganism in inpatient facilities,...
